Overview

Hello everyone, this is Master Bai Yin. Today marks Day 9 of our “VitalQi 10-Day Group Practice,” and we’re turning our attention to the foundation of our body—our feet. There’s a saying: “A journey of a thousand miles begins beneath your feet.” Our feet not only support our body weight and carry us as we explore the world, but in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and Qigong wellness, they play an incredibly vital role, often referred to as the “second heart” of the human body.

In today’s session, I’ll guide you through the profound relationship between foot health, whole-body qi and blood circulation, internal organ function, and emotional calm. We’ll also explore the foot training techniques in VitalQi practice, and why they’re a crucial step in establishing a solid health foundation and achieving “Qi sinking to the Dantian.”

In-Depth Explanation

Dear students, our feet quietly carry the burden of our entire body weight every day. Yet in modern life, they are often neglected. We wear various kinds of shoes, walk or stand on hard surfaces for extended periods, and prolonged sitting further hampers circulation in the legs and feet. Over time, this can lead to issues such as plantar fasciitis, heel pain, ankle sprains, varicose veins, swelling, or cold feet.

These foot issues are far from being just localized discomfort. According to TCM meridian theory, six of the body’s twelve major meridians (Liver, Gallbladder, Spleen, Stomach, Kidney, and Bladder) either start or end at the feet. This means the state of circulation in the feet directly affects the organ systems connected to these meridians.

Foot health is especially closely tied to the Liver, Spleen, and Kidneys:

  • Liver governs tendons: The Liver meridian starts at the big toe. Whether Liver blood is abundant and Liver qi flows freely determines the flexibility and elasticity of the tendons—including the plantar fascia and Achilles tendon. Liver deficiency or stagnation can lead to issues like plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendinitis, recurring ankle sprains, or nighttime leg cramps.
  • Spleen governs muscles and transformation: The Spleen meridian also begins on the inner side of the big toe. When the Spleen functions well, the muscles are firm and limbs feel light. If the Spleen is weak, fluid transformation and blood production decline, leading to muscle weakness, water retention in the legs, and fatigue.
  • Kidneys store essence and govern bones: The Kidney meridian starts at the Yongquan (Bubbling Spring) point on the sole. The Kidneys are the foundation of vitality, and Kidney qi determines bone strength. Kidney deficiency can lead to lower back and knee weakness, heel pain (the back is the residence of the Kidneys, the knees are governed by the tendons, and the heels are also ruled by the Kidneys), osteoporosis, and even impaired development and reproductive function.

Foot Circulation and the “Second Heart”

While the heart pumps blood throughout the body, returning blood from the feet to the heart—the furthest point—requires overcoming gravity, relying heavily on the contraction of leg muscles and proper vein function. That’s why the feet are called the “second heart.” As we age, or if yang energy declines or we lack exercise, qi and blood flow downward easily but struggle to return upward. This can cause blood to pool in the legs, leading to varicose veins, swelling, and heaviness—and overburden the heart. Improving foot circulation is like relieving pressure on the heart.

Foot Training and “Qi Sinking to the Dantian” & Heel Breathing

In Qigong practice, we emphasize “Qi sinking to the Dantian.” The Dantian, located in the lower abdomen, is the energy center for storing and transforming vital energy. When qi can settle deeply into the Dantian—rather than floating around the chest or head—our mind becomes calm, breathing deepens, and the body truly relaxes.

Modern stress and overthinking often cause energy to move upward, concentrating in the upper body. This results in “heavy head, light feet,” restlessness, anxiety, and sleep issues.

To guide qi downward, one essential foundation is strong circulation in the legs and stable lower body. That’s why foot training in VitalQi was designed—through targeted movements using tools like half-round yoga blocks or rolled towels to stretch and press into the soles, heels, Achilles tendons, and the backs of the calves. This helps:

  • Loosen the tendons: Improve elasticity in the plantar fascia, Achilles tendon, and prevent/treat common foot problems.
  • Stimulate key acupoints: Especially Yongquan (Kidney meridian’s Jing well point) to activate qi flow and nourish Kidney energy.
  • Unblock meridians: Promote qi and blood flow through the three yin and three yang foot meridians, relieving swelling and coldness.
  • Guide qi downward: Focusing your mind and movement on the feet helps pull floating qi downward—laying the groundwork for Qi sinking to the Dantian.
  • Stabilize the lower body: Strengthen leg support and balance, bringing your center of gravity lower so your upper body can relax.

Once the meridians in the legs are open and your base is grounded, qi naturally sinks, and your breath will deepen—even to the point of what ancient texts describe as “true breathing through the heels” (heel breathing)—a deep, tranquil, and energy-conserving state. This greatly benefits emotional calm, sleep quality, and energy restoration.

In Lesson 4, I thoroughly explained the details and precautions of foot training. I also emphasized the importance of going step by step and listening to your body.

Conclusion & Reminders

Dear students, our feet are the roots of our health, carrying us toward our dreams. Don’t overlook their importance. Through the foot training practices in VitalQi, we’re not just caring for our feet—we’re supporting organ function, opening meridians, calming the mind, and building a strong foundation for full-body wellness.

During your “VitalQi 10-Day Group Practice,” be sure to practice foot training mindfully. Notice the warmth, relaxation, and grounded feeling that arise. When you begin to feel your breath sink more naturally, your mind calm down, and sleep deepen—that’s the beautiful reward foot training brings.

For those who haven’t yet joined the course: if you often experience discomfort in the legs, poor circulation, mental restlessness, or difficulty falling asleep, the unique foot training method in VitalQi may be your gateway to greater health and inner peace. This system works from the feet upward, refining the body with remarkable depth and subtlety—it’s truly worth exploring.
