【Overview】
Hello everyone, this is Master Bai Yin. As we enter Day 8 of the “VitalQi 10-Day Group Practice,” I believe many of you are starting to experience unusual bodily sensations during your continued practice. You may find yourself yawning or tearing up more easily, or notice increased bowel movements, burping, or flatulence. Perhaps an old injury starts to ache slightly, or red rashes appear on your skin. These reactions might leave beginners feeling confused or even worried: “Am I practicing incorrectly? Why does it feel like my body is getting worse?”
Today, I want to decode these subtle “whispers from the body” that may arise during your VitalQi practice. Most of these are actually signs of detoxification and Qi attacking problem areas, indicating your body is healing and improving—something worth celebrating on your wellness journey!
【In-Depth Explanation】
Dear students, in Qigong—especially a practice like VitalQi, which deeply regulates qi and blood while energizing the organs—it’s normal for your body to undergo changes and realignments as internal energy begins to activate. Some changes feel pleasant: warmth, lightness, improved mental clarity. Others may seem temporarily uncomfortable. Understanding the true nature of these responses is key to practicing confidently and consistently.
Detox Reactions: Your Body’s Deep Clean Mode!
“Detox” is a crucial concept in Qigong wellness. In daily life, due to diet, environment, stress, emotions, and metabolism, our bodies accumulate various visible and invisible “toxins”—waste, dampness, coldness, internal heat, blood stasis, and even suppressed emotional energy. If these toxins linger too long, they block qi and blood flow, disrupt organ function, and create a breeding ground for illness.
Practicing VitalQi stimulates your body’s upright energy (zhèng qì)—your natural healing and self-repairing force—enhancing circulation and metabolism. When this energy becomes active, your body initiates a natural “deep clean,” eliminating toxins through your natural detox pathways:
- Intestines: expelling digestive waste through bowel movements
- Lungs and respiratory tract: clearing phlegm and dampness via breath, coughing, mucus, sneezing
- Skin: releasing cold-dampness, heat-toxins, and metabolic waste through sweat
- Liver and kidneys: filtering and flushing out toxins via detoxification and urination
Common detox signs during practice include:
- Increased burping, flatulence, stomach rumbling: Signs of stagnant digestive qi being moved and digestion improving
- More frequent or larger bowel movements, changes in color or smell: Your body is clearing old waste and intestinal toxins. Even regular bowel movers might release long-held buildup
- Excessive sweating, sticky or smelly sweat: Indicates detox via the skin—coldness, heat toxins, or residual medications. With continued practice, sweat becomes clearer
- Yawning and tearing up: The body is discharging fatigue energy (“juàn qì”) and unblocking energy in the head region
- Runny nose or increased phlegm: Common for those with allergies or respiratory issues—your body is expelling cold and phlegm from the lungs or nasal passages
- Rashes, itchiness, or sha (skin marks): Toxins like drug residues, heavy metals, internal heat, or emotional toxins being pushed to the surface. These usually resolve on their own
- Increased secretions (e.g., vaginal discharge, eye mucus): Another pathway for clearing damp toxins
Though these reactions may be inconvenient or uncomfortable, they are positive signs of your body actively cleansing and restoring health. Embrace them with calmness—or even joy.
Qi Attacking Problem Areas: Upright Qi Battling Illness
In addition to detox reactions, some may notice increased soreness, numbness, swelling, or pain in old injury sites or chronically uncomfortable areas. This is known as Qi attacking problem areas (qì gōng bìng zào).
This does not mean your condition is worsening. Quite the opposite—it’s a critical phase in the healing process. As your upright Qi strengthens through practice, it begins to mobilize and flush out stagnant qi and blood from blocked areas—usually where old trauma or dysfunctions lie.
This process is like an internal “Qi army” launching a campaign to break through the strongholds of lingering illness. Naturally, this may cause a temporary flare-up of discomfort.
As we’ve discussed in VitalQi class:
“Many old injuries seem healed because blood and energy no longer reach them, causing numbness. Once Qigong redirects qi and blood to these neglected areas, they regain sensation—sometimes in the form of pain. That’s your body beginning to repair itself.”
How to Navigate Qi Attacking Problem Areas:
- Stay confident and keep practicing: Trust that this is a sign of healing—not a warning to stop.
- Adjust intensity appropriately: If pain is strong, shorten your practice time or reduce movement range. But try to keep up daily practice.
- Use gentle mental focus: While practicing, softly place your awareness on the affected area. Visualize qi and blood clearing and healing the region.
- Be patient: Everyone’s healing time varies. With consistent practice, the discomfort usually subsides as the area becomes unblocked and restored.
