[Summary]

Hello everyone, I’m Master Bai Yin. Today is Day 7 of our 10-Day VitalQi Group Practice, and we will be focusing on an incredibly important yet often overlooked organ in modern life—our eyes. In both Traditional Chinese Medicine and Qigong, the eyes are not just tools for seeing the world; they are also where the essence and energy (jing and qi) of the internal organs converge. They serve as a mirror reflecting our inner health. In this session, I will guide you to understand the deep connections between the eyes, internal organs, and mental state, and explain why the “eye training” in VitalQi is more than just vision protection—it’s a vital practice for balancing qi and blood and calming the mind.

[In-Depth Explanation]

Dear students, you’ve heard the saying, “The eyes are the windows to the soul.” But have you ever considered that the clarity and brightness of these windows depend deeply on the nourishment and balance of your inner body? The Huangdi Neijing (Yellow Emperor’s Classic of Internal Medicine) states:

“The eyes are the essence of the five zang and six fu organs.”
This means that the refined energy of your internal organs ultimately flows upward to nourish your eyes and support your vision. So, the condition of your eyes often reflects the health of your internal systems.

Among all organs, the liver plays a key role. TCM says:

“The liver opens into the eyes.”
The liver governs smooth energy flow and stores blood. When liver blood is abundant and energy flows freely, your eyes will be nourished and your gaze will appear bright and focused. Conversely:

  • Liver blood deficiency: Poor nutrition or excessive consumption can lead to insufficient liver blood, causing dryness, blurred vision, night blindness, dizziness, and eye fatigue.
  • Liver qi stagnation: Stress or emotional tension can block liver energy, leading to blood stasis and symptoms like eye pressure, pain, reduced vision, or even retinal issues.
  • Liver fire rising: Irritability and pent-up frustration can turn into internal heat, causing redness, swelling, pain, photophobia, and discharge from the eyes.

Other organs also play a role:

  • The kidneys (which transform essence into blood) help nourish the eyes.
  • The spleen (which governs digestion and transformation) is the root of qi and blood production.
In short, eye issues are rarely isolated problems—they often reflect a systemic imbalance in qi and blood flow throughout the organs.

In modern life, long hours spent on screens have created new challenges for our eyes:

  • Visual fatigue: Staring at screens up close for extended periods keeps the ciliary muscles in constant tension, which weakens focus ability and leads to worsened myopia, early presbyopia, and dryness.
  • Blue light damage: The intense, short-wavelength blue light emitted by screens can penetrate the lens and reach deep into the retina, potentially causing lasting harm. More importantly, blue light exposure at night suppresses melatonin and disrupts your biological clock, damaging sleep quality. In our first Early Access lesson, I emphasized that blue light depletes liver qi and makes the eyes more sensitive and fragile.
  • Qi and blood stagnation: Poor posture and prolonged head-down positions cause shoulder and neck stiffness, hindering the upward flow of qi and blood to the head, which leads to eye pressure, headaches, and discomfort.

Faced with all these challenges, eye drops or simple rest often fall short. The “Eye Training” practice in VitalQi offers a more proactive and foundational path to eye wellness.

The Principles Behind Eye Training in VitalQi

This is no mere eye exercise—it’s rooted in the wisdom of Qigong:

  • Regulate focus distance and relax muscles: Alternating between near and far focus trains the flexibility of the ciliary muscles, relieving tension and preventing spasms and fatigue.
  • Guide qi and blood to nourish the eyes: Combined with full-body movements and breathwork, the practice directs energy to the head and face, nourishing the meridians and tissues essential for vision and alleviating symptoms like dryness and blurriness caused by deficient qi and blood.
  • Balance yin and yang, soothe liver and clear fire: The design of eye training incorporates dynamic balance—when looking far, inhale and raise your intent upward to uplift clear yang qi; when looking near, exhale and draw your intent inward to sink excess fire. This helps especially with symptoms related to liver qi stagnation or rising liver fire. In our first lesson, I explained that the left eye governs the upward movement of liver qi, while the right eye supports its downward flow. This eye training taps into that exact principle.
  • Calm the mind and improve sleep: The eyes are closely connected to the brain and spirit (shen). When the eyes are relaxed and no longer over-stimulating the brain, the mind naturally settles. The focused attention required during eye training also helps center the mind, which is particularly beneficial for those dealing with overthinking, restlessness, or insomnia.

Many students have shared that after practicing eye training, not only do their eyes feel more comfortable and their vision clearer, but they also experience relief from headaches and pressure in the head. Some even sleep better. This is because eye training doesn’t just benefit the eyes—it harmonizes the entire mind-body system.
