Overview

Hello everyone, this is Master Bai Yin. Today marks Day 4 of our “VitalQi 10-Day Group Practice.” We’re going to explore one of the most profound and essential concepts in Qigong wellness: the “Hun and Po” (魂魄)—the soul and spirit—and the principle of “Inner Stillness.” While this may sound abstract, it’s deeply connected to our mental state, emotional stability, sleep quality, and overall physical and mental wellbeing. Understanding the meaning of Hun and Po and the importance of spiritual stillness will help us grasp the true essence of VitalQi. It teaches us how to anchor ourselves from within, shield ourselves from external disturbances, and attain genuine balance and health.

In-Depth Explanation

Dear students, in the frameworks of Qigong and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), Hun (魂) and Po (魄) are not mystical or superstitious ideas about ghosts or spirits. Rather, they describe two vital forms of life energy and consciousness that correspond to different aspects of human experience—mental and physical, night and day. You can think of them as part of the body’s autopilot system, governing both our inner awareness and physical instincts.

The Liver Stores the Hun — Governing the Spirit and Rest:

In TCM, it is said that “the liver stores the Hun.” This refers to the part of our energy associated with emotions, thoughts, dreams, and spiritual activity. During the day, Hun moves with our conscious mind, enabling us to think, feel, and interact with the world. At night, “when we lie down, blood returns to the liver,” nourishing it and allowing the Hun, which resides there, to settle and rest.

If the liver is out of balance—due to excessive stress causing “Liver Qi stagnation” or emotional upheaval leading to “Liver Fire rising”—the liver fails to circulate and nourish blood properly. This leaves the Hun restless and ungrounded, resulting in:

By day:

  • Mental fog, poor concentration, forgetfulness
  • Irritability, indecisiveness, emotional instability
  • Feeling like you’ve “lost your soul”

By night:

  • Difficulty falling asleep, excessive dreaming, nightmares
  • Restlessness, frequent awakenings
  • Sleepwalking, talking in sleep—signs of “the Hun leaving its home”

The Lung Stores the Po — Governing Instinct and Action:

In contrast, the Po resides in the lungs. It governs our sensory perception (sight, hearing, smell, taste, touch), physiological functions (breathing, heartbeat, digestion, elimination), and coordination of bodily movement. When we say someone has poise or vital presence, we’re often referring to the Po—a vigorous life force rooted in healthy lung function.

The lungs command Qi throughout the body, control respiration, and regulate fluid pathways. When lung Qi is sufficient, breathing is smooth, Qi and blood circulate properly, and instinctive physiological functions remain in harmony. But if lung Qi is deficient or disordered, Po function is impaired, leading to:

  • Dulled senses: Low sensitivity to pain, temperature
  • Delayed responses: Sluggish movement or reaction
  • Physical imbalance: Shallow breathing, fatigue, weak immunity, fluid retention
  • Sleep issues: Snoring, sleep apnea, hyper-alertness, waking at the slightest noise

Harmonizing Hun and Po through Inner Stillness

As you can see, Hun and Po are like complementary Yin-Yang partners that together maintain our physical and emotional health. During the day, Yang energy dominates and Po is more active, helping us engage with the world. At night, Yin energy rises and the Hun seeks stillness, while Po maintains basic physiological stability. Balance between the two ensures overall wellness.

The key to harmonizing Hun and Po lies in what the Huangdi Neijing (Yellow Emperor’s Classic of Medicine) describes as “spiritual stillness within” (精神內守). What does this mean? It’s about drawing our scattered energy inward—reining in excessive thoughts, worries, desires, and emotional fluctuations—so we can settle peacefully within and remain centered.

When we achieve inner stillness:

  • The heart-mind calms: Less affected by external stimuli or internal mood swings
  • Qi and blood flow harmonize: Circulation and energy flow become orderly
  • Organs function harmoniously: The five organs receive proper nourishment
  • Hun and Po return to their homes: We feel clear-headed by day and sleep deeply at night

However, today’s fast-paced lifestyle, high stress, and overwhelming information make it easy for our energy to scatter and hard to maintain inner stillness. Over time, this leads to exhaustion, poor circulation, organ dysfunction, and unrest of Hun and Po—opening the door to many physical and emotional disorders.

How VitalQi Supports Inner Stillness

VitalQi practice offers a powerful method for cultivating this state of inner calm and harmony.

1. Dynamic Practice to Regulate Qi and Nourish the Organs

Through gentle, flowing movements, we stimulate meridians, balance Qi and blood, and restore harmony among the internal organs—creating a safe haven for the mind and spirit. In class, you’ve practiced postures that stretch the body, guide Qi downward, open the spine, replenish vitality, release blockages, and consolidate energy.

2. Still Practice to Anchor the Spirit and Calm the Soul

Through breathing techniques and seated stillness, we slow the breath, center our awareness, and quiet the mind—guiding spirit and soul back to peace. In Lecture 9, I emphasized the preparatory mindset for stillness:
“Fulfillment brings peace of mind; peace of mind removes fear; fearlessness leads to calm.”
Three key steps support this process:

  • One Minute of Stillness and Focus
  • One Moment of Sensory Awareness
  • One Reflection on Self
These stages help calm the nervous system and prepare us for deep inner stillness.

3. Harmonizing Practice with Nature’s Rhythms

VitalQi emphasizes aligning with nature’s daily cycle. Practice dynamic forms in the morning to raise Yang energy, and stillness in the evening to draw inward and nourish Yin—restoring the body’s natural rhythm.

Through consistent VitalQi practice, we not only strengthen the body but also cultivate inner resilience. In a chaotic world, we learn to remain grounded and calm, allowing Hun and Po to reside peacefully within. This inner harmony lays the foundation for lasting health and vitality.

Closing Thoughts and Gentle Reminder

Dear students, the concept of Hun, Po, and “spiritual stillness” may feel deep or abstract at first, but it is a vital key to mastering Qigong and achieving holistic health. True wellness is not merely the absence of illness—it is the presence of inner peace and harmony.

As you continue with the “VitalQi 10-Day Group Practice,” don’t focus only on perfecting the movements. Pay attention to the inner experience: the growing sense of peace, clarity, and release. Every session is a chance to practice spiritual stillness.

And for those who haven’t yet joined us—if you often feel restless, distracted, have trouble sleeping, or experience emotional ups and downs, VitalQi may offer unexpected support. It’s more than a physical exercise—it’s a path to inner calm and harmony.

Remember: “Spiritual stillness” isn’t achieved in one day. It requires steady practice and personal insight. Let us continue this VitalQi journey together, gently guiding our energy inward, settling the Hun and Po, and becoming calm, clear, and truly healthy—inside and out.

The true value of this practice goes far beyond words. Only through experience can its wonders be truly understood.
