【Overview】

Hello everyone, I’m Master Bai Yin. Following yesterday’s discussion on stress, today we’ll dive into another major concern of modern life: sleep. Poor sleep doesn’t just make us tired and irritable during the day—it’s also a silent threat to long-term health. On Day 2 of the 10-Day VitalQi Group Practice, I’d like to share how, from both Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and Qigong perspectives, sleep quality is closely linked to the health of our internal organs—the five zang and six fu. Why do some people feel exhausted yet can’t fall asleep? Why do we often wake up in the middle of the night? The answers often lie in subtle imbalances within our internal systems. Once we understand this connection, we can see how VitalQi works at the root—by restoring organ harmony to naturally improve sleep.

【In-Depth Explanation】

Dear students,

“A good night’s sleep” is something many people long for—but for many modern individuals, it feels like a luxury. Insomnia, vivid dreams, light sleep, early waking, and frequent night urination—these various sleep disturbances don’t just affect your energy during the day. Over time, they can trigger memory decline, weakened immunity, cardiovascular issues, hormonal imbalances, and more. According to the World Health Organization, nearly one-third of adults globally suffer from chronic sleep problems—a truly alarming figure.

So, what exactly is stealing our sleep?

Beyond external stressors, environmental factors, and poor habits (like using your phone before bed, which disrupts melatonin production), one critical internal factor is often overlooked: the balance of our internal organs.

In the wisdom of Traditional Chinese Medicine, sleep isn’t just about resting the brain. It’s a vital time for the organs to repair, detoxify, and restore energy. The Huangdi Neijing (Yellow Emperor’s Inner Classic) says, “When a person lies down, blood returns to the liver.” Nighttime is when the body truly recharges. Our five major organs—Heart, Liver, Spleen, Lungs, and Kidneys—each govern essential physical functions and mental-emotional activities (the Heart governs the mind, Liver governs the flow of qi and emotions, Spleen governs digestion, Lungs govern qi, Kidneys store essence). Their coordinated functioning is key to yin-yang balance and smooth qi-blood flow—factors that deeply influence sleep quality.

In the VitalQi course, I often share a few common examples of how organ imbalances can lead to sleep issues:

🔸 “When the stomach is not in harmony, sleep will be restless.”
This refers to Spleen-Stomach dysfunction. The Spleen and Stomach are the source of qi and blood and govern the rise and fall of qi. Irregular eating, eating too late, or stress-related digestive issues can cause food stagnation, indigestion, bloating, or acid reflux. This obstructs qi in the middle burner and disrupts the natural downward flow of stomach qi—making it difficult to sleep. Over time, it can lead to “stomach fire,” with symptoms like bad breath and constipation that further aggravate insomnia.

🔸 “The liver stores the soul; at night, blood returns to the liver.”
The Liver governs the smooth flow of qi and stores blood. It also manages emotional regulation. Prolonged stress or suppressed emotions can cause Liver qi stagnation or transform into Liver fire, both of which disturb the spirit. At night, blood should return to the liver to nourish the soul (hun), but if Liver qi is stuck, the soul cannot rest—resulting in difficulty falling asleep, frequent dreaming, or waking between 1–3 a.m. (the Liver time in TCM). You may also experience dry mouth, a bitter taste, or a tight chest.

🔸 “The Heart stores the mind; Heart and Kidney not in communication.”
The Heart governs the spirit; the Kidney stores essence and governs water metabolism—foundational for life. Normally, Heart fire should descend, and Kidney water should rise to create a “water-fire harmony.” But if overthinking depletes Heart blood, or if Kidney essence is deficient, the imbalance causes Heart fire to flare up without being anchored. This leads to anxiety, restlessness, racing thoughts, and poor sleep. When yin and yang are out of sync, the spirit becomes unsettled—resulting in insomnia, excessive dreaming, forgetfulness, and irritability.

As you can see, sleep quality isn’t just about taking sleeping pills to suppress symptoms. The key lies in restoring the functional harmony of the internal organs, rebalancing qi, blood, yin, and yang.

This is where VitalQi shines. This practice doesn’t treat symptoms in isolation—it takes a holistic approach. Through targeted movements (like those in our class that open the spine’s energy flow, nourish Kidney qi, or release Liver tension) and breathing regulation (such as slow, deep Tu-Na breathing), we unblock meridians and harmonize the five organs.

For instance:

  • Some movements aid digestion and improve “disharmony of the stomach.”
  • Others focus on smoothing Liver qi and calming emotions to reduce “Liver fire.”
  • Still others help Heart fire descend and nourish Kidney water, restoring “Heart-Kidney communication.”

As organ function returns to balance, qi and blood flow smoothly, and internal yin-yang harmonizes. This calms the mind and stabilizes the spirit. When night comes, the hun (ethereal soul) returns to the Liver, and the po (corporeal soul) fulfills its role. The body’s natural healing mechanism activates, and we enter restful, deep sleep. Many students have shared that their insomnia improved significantly after practicing VitalQi. One student, Ms. Cai, said her chest tightness eased, her breathing became deeper, and even her daytime irritability lessened—an excellent example of how mind and body influence each other.

【Conclusion & Reminder】

Dear students, sleep is heaven’s greatest gift of healing—the best natural tonic. When you’re not sleeping well, it’s often your body signaling an internal imbalance. I hope today’s sharing helps you better understand the deep connection between sleep and organ health.

In this 10-Day VitalQi Group Practice, each session is a gentle way of caring for our organs—building a strong foundation for restful sleep. Keep practicing, observe your body, and you may be surprised to find that not only does your sleep improve, but your daytime energy, mood, and digestion also transform. This is the true power of VitalQi’s holistic approach.

And to those who are still on the fence—if you’ve struggled with sleep problems for a long time, and nothing else has worked, maybe it’s time to shift your perspective.
