For more than a decade, Hong Lian lived with pain that seemed to have no solution. Shoulder and neck problems, and monthly menstrual cramps so severe they left her unable to stand, had gradually worn away her quality of life. Both Western and traditional Chinese medicine had offered little lasting relief.
What changed was finding Bai Yin Qigong.
Where It Began: A Waterbed Incident
Hong Lian’s physical troubles traced back to an unexpected incident during her postpartum recovery. Resting on a newly purchased waterbed in winter, she had no idea the bed had sprung a slow leak. It was two weeks before she discovered that her body had been lying in a persistently damp, cold environment.
From that point on, her health deteriorated steadily. Shoulder and neck pain set in, eventually requiring frequent rehabilitation treatment.
Then, as she approached menopause, a new problem emerged. Severe menstrual cramps arrived each month without fail.
“My abdomen hurt, my lower back hurt, it hurt when I stood, and it hurt when I lay down. I felt like crying, but I could only endure it,” she recalled.
She sought help from both Western and traditional Chinese medicine practitioners. Nothing brought lasting relief. Each month, she relied on painkillers just to get through. During one particularly severe episode, the pain was intense enough to cause vomiting. At that point, she described life with this condition as almost unbearable.
The Emotional Toll
Physical pain rarely travels alone. During those years, Hong Lian found herself increasingly affected by her emotional state. Minor setbacks in daily life would leave her withdrawn and distressed, carrying a lingering sense of frustration she struggled to articulate.
“Sometimes, I really felt that no one in the world understood me,” she said. “This feeling of being emotionally suppressed made me feel so helpless.”
The emotional and physical difficulties fed each other, compounding the strain on her day-to-day life.
A Decision to Change
After years of pain and frustration, Hong Lian came across a Bai Yin Qigong video. She was struck by the teacher’s energy and vitality.
“That’s the state I want to be in,” she thought.
She decided to act immediately and began learning the HarmonyQi Stress Relief practice. Her motivation was clear: she did not want to continue being limited by pain as she aged, nor did she want to become a burden on her family.
She was initially sceptical. Such simple movements, after everything else she had tried, seemed unlikely to make much difference. But she continued.
What Changed
The changes came more quickly than she had expected.
Within one month, her menstrual cramps had become significantly less severe. She no longer needed painkillers. By the second month, she was able to go through her cycle without any medication at all.
“To me, it felt nothing short of a miracle,” she said.
The shoulder and neck pain that had troubled her for years also improved noticeably. In the past, she had needed regular rehabilitation visits whenever the pain became unmanageable. After beginning Qigong, she found her body’s natural recovery capacity had strengthened, and those visits became far less frequent.
The emotional shifts were equally significant. Where she had previously become upset over minor things, she found herself better able to manage her responses. She learned to pause, think positively, and maintain composure when things did not go as planned.

Her Family Noticed Too
Hong Lian’s son had often witnessed her in pain, sometimes massaging her lower back to help ease her discomfort. When he saw that she no longer needed painkillers, his response was simple: “Mum, you really made a great choice.”
As her emotional wellbeing improved, so did her relationships at home. Family members found her easier to be around, and those bonds became noticeably closer.
Looking Back
Hong Lian no longer describes herself as the woman tormented by monthly pain, or the mother whose physical discomfort made daily work difficult. She describes herself as stronger, more positive, and more confident about the future.
Her view on the investment is straightforward: the longer she practises, the greater the benefit she receives. To her, the decision to begin was one of the most worthwhile she has made.
