Ancient wisdom meets modern practice: How a legendary master’s teachings live on
Welcome to the profound world of Master Zhang Sanfeng, whose cultivation path represents not just the essence of Qigong, but a remarkable fusion of Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism. His writings, especially the alchemical poems in The Rootless Tree, contain deep life wisdom that continues to resonate today—particularly through the advanced Turtle Longevity Technique in Bai Yin Qigong.
The Path of Integrating the Three Teachings Through Qigong
The Unity of Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism
Master Zhang Sanfeng emphasized that the cultivation goals of Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism ultimately lead to the same destination.
Confucianism speaks of “practicing the Way to benefit society.”
Buddhism teaches “awakening to the Way and enlightening the world.”
Taoism focuses on “preserving the Way and guiding others.”
In other words, Confucianism values benevolence and righteousness, Buddhism emphasizes compassion, and Taoism pursues harmony with nature. These are simply different paths toward the same goal—all virtues that practitioners should cultivate.
He said:
“Do not cling to distinctions of status, wisdom, age, or strength. As long as one quietly performs good deeds, practices kindness and compassion, and upholds loyalty, filial piety, trustworthiness, and sincerity, fully embodying the human way, then the immortal path will naturally not be far away.”
Simply put, regardless of social status or age, as long as one practices virtue, cultivates goodness, and refines one’s character, the path of higher cultivation will naturally draw closer.
Zhang Sanfeng believed that Confucian moral cultivation and Qigong practice should be closely integrated. Quoting The Great Learning, he said:
“When a person cultivates and rectifies the body and mind, true essence and true spirit naturally gather within. Virtue and inner qualities will naturally manifest outwardly.”
This means that self-cultivation and moral refinement are essential in Qigong practice.
The Integration of the Essence of the Three Teachings
Master Zhang Sanfeng was able to integrate the essence of all three traditions, creating a unique system of cultivation.
He said:
“Though lacking in talent, I have studied the teachings of many schools, synthesized the principles of the three teachings, and realized that they all follow the same Way.”
Because he deeply understood these different traditions, he was able to grasp the essential truth of cultivation and discover the common principles shared among them.

The Mysteries of Qigong Cultivation
The Arts of Internal and External Alchemy
Master Zhang Sanfeng was skilled in both internal alchemy practice and external alchemical methods.
He said:
“Cultivate the human essence while also integrating the essence of the earth.”
This means combining personal inner cultivation with the refinement of external alchemical methods. However, he emphasized that one must ultimately “consume the Great Elixir” to truly attain the Way. External alchemy is only one stage and method within the cultivation process.
He pointed out:
“Only after attaining the Way should one refine and consume the elixir. This elixir, though as small as a grain of millet, when placed upon the ground shines with golden light that illuminates the heavens. Only then can it be called the divine elixir. If one has not reached spiritual understanding, how can one dare claim it is true external alchemy? This principle is profound, and its heavenly secrets are deep.”
In other words, the refinement of external alchemy is merely a method for training the body and mind and accumulating energy. The true Great Elixir lies in inner realization and cultivation of the Great Way. This requires long-term meditation and deep contemplation to understand its profound mysteries.
The Correspondence Between the Five Virtues and the Five Organs
Master Zhang Sanfeng also connected the Five Virtues of Confucianism with the body’s five internal organs, forming a unique theory of cultivation:
• Benevolence belongs to Wood and governs the liver. It embodies the intention to nurture and care for others.
• Righteousness belongs to Metal and governs the lungs. It reflects the ability to exercise proper judgment and appropriateness.
• Propriety belongs to Fire and governs the heart. It manifests as clarity, brightness, and proper conduct.
• Wisdom belongs to Water and governs the kidneys. It carries the quality of clarity and deep understanding.
• Trustworthiness belongs to Earth and governs the spleen. It represents sincerity and mutual trust.
He believed that only when all five virtues are fully cultivated and the five organs are in harmony can one reach a state of cultivation aligned with Heaven and Earth.
This theory, which integrates ethical virtue with physical and spiritual cultivation, reflects remarkable creativity and wisdom.
The Legacy and Writings of Zhang Sanfeng
The Diversity of the Lineages
Master Zhang Sanfeng first studied the teachings of the Quanzhen tradition under Zhang Yunan, and later became a disciple of Huo Long, where he learned the cultivation methods of the Wenshi lineage.
He trained many outstanding disciples who spread across different regions and established various Taoist schools and lineages, including:
• The Wangwu Mountain Natural School – Emphasized harmony with nature and the pursuit of returning to simplicity and authenticity.
• The Sanfeng School – Preserved Zhang Sanfeng’s cultivation methods and inner alchemy teachings.
• The Sanfeng Natural School – Combined the strengths of both the Sanfeng and Natural traditions, cultivating both internal and external alchemy practices.
• The Sanfeng Penglai School – Focused on attaining immortality through alchemical practices involving the legendary Penglai elixir wine.
• The Rixin School – Advocated continual daily learning and innovation without rigid limitations, hence the name “Rixin,” meaning “renewing daily.”
These different schools demonstrate the broad influence of Zhang Sanfeng’s cultivation philosophy. His disciples spread throughout famous sacred mountains such as Wudang, Wangwu, and Penglai, each developing their own unique paths of cultivation.

Life Insights from The Rootless Tree
Master Zhang Sanfeng wrote many works, including Direct Instructions on the Golden Elixir and Secrets of the Golden Elixir. These writings are now collected in The Complete Works of Master Zhang Sanfeng. Among them, the alchemical poems in The Rootless Tree are especially rich in life philosophy and have been passed down through generations.

One of the verses states:
“The rootless tree, its flowers are in full bloom. From the crescent furnace they are gathered. They extend life and eliminate illness and disaster. They prepare spiritual wealth to share with worthy companions. From this may heavenly treasures be attained. Let the confused laugh at me as a fool. I urge the worthy to cultivate and abandon clever tricks. Without encountering a true master, do not force yourself to guess the mysteries.”
After completing the advanced course, many students have expressed deep gratitude for encountering such remarkable teachers in this lifetime and for learning the powerful Super Turtle Longevity Technique. They describe the experience as bringing great joy and profound appreciation.
