Chao Yuanfang and "Syndrome-Specific Qigong Practice"

First, let's examine Chao Yuanfang, the Sui Dynasty medical scholar who can be considered the master who systematized the theory of "customizing qigong for specific diseases." His Treatise on the Origins and Symptoms of Diseases meticulously categorizes various causes and pathologies of illnesses—and for each condition, he prescribed corresponding qigong therapies. This remarkable book contains over 200 qigong prescriptions, truly making him a master of targeted disease treatment through tailored practices!

The Healing Revelations of the Daoyin Tu (Exercise Chart)

However, even before Chao Yuanfang, pioneers had already initiated the practice of "syndrome-specific qigong." The excavated artifact Daoyin Tu (Exercise Chart) repeatedly documents specialized techniques like "guiding knee pain," "directing spleen disorders," and "channeling febrile diseases," proving that over 700 years before the Sui Dynasty, our ancestors were already using guided movements to eliminate ailments.

So What Exactly is "Guiding" (引)?

The term "guiding" (引) refers to using special hand gestures and breathing techniques to direct and expel pathogenic qi from the body, achieving healing and health strengthening. Chao Yuanfang explained it as follows:

"To guide means to draw out the old, stagnant pathogenic qi from within the body, allowing it to exit through the guiding motion—hence the name 'daoyin' (guiding and leading)."

For example:

  • "Guiding spleen pain" involves a horse-riding stance with hands placed on the outer sides of the knees, drawing diseased qi from around the spleen outward along the knee joints
  • "Guiding knee pain" requires raising the hands to the armpits, expelling harmful qi near the knees through this exit pointDoes this sound mystical? In fact, this "guiding method" is still widely used today for certain stubborn conditions.

The Unique Dietary Therapy of "Grain Fasting and Qi Absorption"

Another precious text is Grain Fasting and Qi Absorption (Bigu Shiqi). In an ancient silk painting, it appears alongside the Exercise Chart and the Moxibustion Classic of the Eleven Yin-Yang Meridians, indicating their interconnected content. While the Exercise Chart focuses on dynamic movements, Grain Fasting and Qi Absorption complements it with meditative nourishment techniques—the two work even better in combination.
The Grain Fasting and Qi Absorption text dates back to the Han Dynasty. Historical records mention that Zhang Liang "practiced grain abstention, guiding exercises, and body lightening," showing this dietary therapy was already quite popular at the time.

What is "Bigu" (Grain Fasting)?

"Bigu" means abstaining from the five staple grains and instead consuming a medicinal herb called Pyrrosia (石韦). Pyrrosia can treat "five types of urinary blockages" and promote urination. The consumption method follows a special ritual rather than direct ingestion:
"On the first day of the month, eat one segment; increase by one segment each day until the fifteenth day, then stop. After the full moon begins to wane, decrease by one segment each day until the month's end returns to one segment, advancing and retreating with the moon."
In simple terms: On the first day of each lunar month, eat one segment of Pyrrosia. Increase by one segment daily until the fifteenth day. After the full moon, reduce intake by one segment daily until only one segment remains at month's end. Repeat this cycle monthly.

The Purpose of "Bigu"—Healing or Immortality?

Was grain fasting intended to treat illness or cultivate immortality? Historical records suggest it was primarily for medical needs, as texts mention Zhang Liang "being often ill, thus practicing daoyin and abstaining from grains."
Furthermore, the text states that even without complete grain abstinence, simply consuming some Pyrrosia could strengthen the body.
However, some people at the time may have practiced it seeking immortality. Still, the pursuit of immortality carries superstitious connotations that deviate from the goal of improving health.

The Secret Art of "Qi Consumption"

The main focus of this ancient text is "consuming qi," commonly known as "taking in qi" or "gathering qi." The author emphasizes that when practicing qi absorption in different seasons, special attention must be paid to environmental factors:
Optimal Times for Seasonal Qi Absorption

Spring Qi Absorption

Choose times when morning glow fills the sky or evening glow lingers softly. Avoid days with weak sunlight and gloomy, overcast skies—clear, unobstructed sunlight is most conducive to absorbing and transforming qi.

Summer Qi Absorption

Avoid scorching hot winds; practice at dawn with morning glow or at dusk as the sun sets—typically when winds are calm.

Autumn Qi Absorption

Steer clear of frost-laden winds; choose moments when the sun lingers near the horizon or under a bright full moon, when yang energy is abundant.

Winter Qi Absorption

Guard against piercing cold winds; practice when warm sun shines or bright moon hangs high, absorbing the purest yang and yin essences of heaven and earth.

Ancient Wisdom on Optimal Practice Timing

Only by choosing the most auspicious celestial timing and seasonal energy can practitioners absorb the most abundant vital forces of heaven and earth, which greatly benefits physical strengthening and health preservation.
Of course, if pursued solely for the fantasy of immortality and eternal life, it remains wishful thinking. However, temporary grain fasting to regulate the body may indeed offer minor restorative effects for certain ailments—though this requires deeper research and verification by modern medical experts.
In any case, regarding qi cultivation practice, the experience and wisdom passed down by the ancients are truly invaluable treasures, worthy of our study and adaptation! Their profound insights into optimal practice timing remain deeply enlightening, ensuring the legacy of qigong wisdom endures.
