【Summary】

Hello everyone, I’m Master Bai Yin. Today marks Day 6 of the VitalQi 10-Day Group Practice, and we’re diving deep into an essential yet often overlooked life process—breathing. In Qigong wellness practice, breathing is not just an instinctive act for survival. It is a powerful tool for energy exchange and mind-body regulation. Today, I’ll guide you through the Qigong method of Tuna (pronounced “too-nah”), a specialized form of breathing. You’ll understand how it differs from ordinary breathing and learn how to consciously breathe to absorb oxygen and energy (receive pure qi) while expelling waste and turbid energy (release impure qi). This practice helps calm the nervous system, enhance circulation, and improve sleep quality.

【Detailed Explanation】

Dear students, from the moment we’re born to our final breath, we breathe without pause. Most of the time, our breathing is automatically regulated by the autonomic nervous system and doesn’t require conscious effort. However, in today’s fast-paced, high-stress world, unconscious breathing tends to become shallow and rapid—mainly using only the upper part of the lungs. This limits oxygen exchange and can leave the body in a constant state of mild oxygen deprivation. Over time, this can lead to fatigue, lack of focus, dizziness, chest tightness, snoring, allergies, and even emotional instability or poor sleep.

Qigong elevates the act of breathing to a conscious, purposeful practice known as Tuna (吐納). As I emphasized in Lesson 5 of the preview class, the key difference between “breathing” and “Tuna” lies in consciousness. Tuna involves using awareness to guide the rhythm, depth, and style of your breath, turning it from a basic biological process into a powerful energy cultivation and wellness technique.

The Core of Tuna: Releasing the Old, Receiving the New — A Dynamic Energy Exchange

The term “Tuna” itself carries deep meaning.

  • Tu Gu (吐故) means to consciously release the body’s internal waste gases, turbid qi, and even negative emotions or stress.
  • Na Xin (納新) refers to drawing in fresh, pure oxygen and universal energy (clear and righteous qi) to nourish the organs and revitalize the body.

Thus, a full Tuna cycle is not just a physical gas exchange—it is a profound energetic transformation and purification. Through effective Tuna practice, you can:

  • Increase oxygen levels: Deep breathing brings oxygen deeper into the lungs, enriching the blood and energizing every cell.
  • Improve qi and blood circulation: Breath rhythm affects qi flow. Slow, deep breathing promotes smoother circulation and warms the extremities.
  • Massage internal organs: Diaphragmatic breathing creates a gentle massage for organs like the liver, spleen, stomach, and intestines, boosting their function.
  • Calm the nervous system: Rhythmic, slow breathing activates the parasympathetic system, soothing both body and mind. It slows the heart rate and relieves anxiety—just like I mentioned in Lesson 5: Tuna is the “switch” for autonomic nervous regulation.
  • Expel turbid energy and waste: Conscious exhalation helps release trapped carbon dioxide and metabolic byproducts. Students often experience burping or flatulence during practice—this is part of the detox process.

Tuna Techniques: The Key Principles

To practice Tuna effectively, keep these essential principles in mind:

  • Exhale before you inhale: This is the first and most important step. Before taking in fresh air, consciously empty the lungs of stale air—just like you must empty a cup before refilling it.
  • Inhale through the nose, exhale through mouth (or both): The nose filters, warms, and humidifies the air, so it’s best for inhaling. When exhaling, especially in beginner stages or during detoxification, using both the mouth and nose allows for a smoother release of turbid qi. VitalQi Tuna emphasizes exhaling through both mouth and nose.
  • Let the body follow the breath: Breathing is not isolated. Align it with posture. As you inhale, slightly straighten your body and open the chest. As you exhale, allow the body to relax and settle. This supports the natural rise and fall of qi.
  • Aim for “Even, Fine, Deep, and Long” breathing—the four standards of high-quality Tuna:
  • Even (勻): Maintain a steady pace, with balanced inhale and exhale durations—avoid sudden or uneven breath.
  • Fine (細): The breath should be gentle and thread-like, without harsh or noisy exhalations. The finer the breath, the deeper it penetrates.
  • Deep (深): The breath should reach down into the abdomen (dantian), not remain in the chest. Practice abdominal breathing to achieve this.
  • Long (長): As your practice deepens, the length of each breath naturally increases—signaling enhanced lung capacity and refined energy flow. You may eventually sense breath extending to the limbs, achieving the advanced state of “heel breathing” (踵息).

In Lesson 5 of the preview class, we practiced 4-beat, 6-beat, and 8-beat breathing patterns. We also added intentions to release stomach discomfort and resentment during exhalation, and included a high-level “pause” technique. This “pause” is not about holding your breath forcefully but rather creating a natural moment of stillness between inhale and exhale, making the transition smoother and the breath more continuous and profound.

【Conclusion & Reminder】

Dear students, while breathing is an innate ability, mastering Tuna is a profound skill that we can cultivate. It not only benefits physical health but also greatly enhances emotional and mental well-being.

During the VitalQi 10-Day Group Practice, please give special attention to Tuna training. Don’t worry about being perfect—what matters is that you practice consciously and observe the subtle changes in every breath. When your breath becomes smoother, your body more relaxed, and your mind more serene—you’re on the right path.

For those who haven’t joined the course yet: if you often feel tired, short of breath, mentally drained, or have poor sleep, learning proper Tuna breathing can bring unexpected health benefits. VitalQi not only teaches you movements—it teaches you how to use your breath as a key to unlock your body’s self-healing power. This system’s richness and depth are worth discovering.

Remember, every conscious breath is a gift to your life. Let’s learn to breathe well through VitalQi—release the old, receive the new, and fill body and mind with pure energy and vitality.
