【Summary】

Hello everyone, I’m Master Bai Yin. Welcome to Day 3 of our “VitalQi 10-Day Group Practice.” Today, we’ll explore a fundamental principle of health—balancing Qi and Blood, and Yin and Yang. According to traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), many discomforts or diseases stem from one core issue: an imbalance between Yin and Yang.
So what exactly are Qi and Blood? What do Yin and Yang represent? How do they influence our health? And how does VitalQi help us restore this vital balance? This article offers an in-depth explanation to help you care for your health from its very foundation.

【Detailed Explanation】

Dear students,
Our body is like a miniature universe full of mystery. Within this inner universe, two fundamental energies constantly interact to sustain life: Yin and Yang.

In simple terms:

  • Yang represents warmth, activity, rising, and outward-moving energy—like the sun. It powers bodily functions and is often called “Yang Qi” or “Vital Qi.”
  • Yin represents moisture, calm, descending, and inward-moving energy—like the moon or water. It nourishes and stores, referring to bodily fluids such as blood and other liquids.

These two energies must stay dynamically balanced, much like two sides of a seesaw. Yang Qi should be abundant but not excessive. Yin fluids must be sufficient but not overflowing. Yang drives function; Yin supports and restrains Yang to prevent overconsumption.
When this balance breaks, the body begins to experience problems. As I often say in our VitalQi classes:

“Excess Yang shortens life; Excess Yin leads to illness.”

Too much Yang causes the body to “burn out” like a machine spinning without load, often resulting in acute conditions. Too much Yin (like excessive dampness) slows down metabolism and causes lingering chronic issues.

The key carriers that maintain Yin-Yang balance are Qi and Blood:

  • Qi belongs to Yang—formless and active, it pushes, warms, and defends.
  • Blood belongs to Yin—visible and stable, it nourishes and moistens.

In TCM, we say:

“Qi commands Blood; Blood is the mother of Qi.”

This means Qi drives blood circulation, and blood provides the material basis to produce Qi. One cannot exist without the other.

“Where Qi flows, Blood follows. Where Qi stagnates, Blood congeals.”

Free-flowing Qi ensures smooth blood circulation. If Qi is blocked (Qi stagnation), blood stagnates as well.

Why do so many people today suffer from Qi-Blood deficiency and Yin-Yang imbalance?

Here are the main reasons:

  • Chronic Stress: Long-term tension, anxiety, or depression causes Qi stagnation, especially “Liver Qi Stagnation,” disrupting Qi flow and affecting organ function.
  • Irregular Lifestyle: Frequent late nights and lack of sleep severely deplete Yang Qi and Yin Blood. Nighttime is the body’s Yin-nourishing and repair time. Skipping sleep is like overdrawing from your health reserves.
  • Poor Diet: Excess consumption of cold or raw foods and iced drinks damages Spleen and Stomach Yang, affecting Qi-Blood production and causing dampness and Yang deficiency.
  • Lack of Movement: “Movement generates Yang.” Modern sedentary lifestyles restrict Qi circulation, leading to sluggish or stagnant flow. Prolonged exposure to air-conditioning can further invite cold into the body, causing Qi to congeal.
  • Environmental Toxins: Pollution and toxins deplete your body’s upright energy (Zheng Qi) and disrupt Qi-Blood flow.

When Qi and Blood are deficient or blocked, and Yin and Yang are out of balance, your Wei Qi (defensive energy) weakens. You become more vulnerable to external pathogens (wind, cold, heat, damp, dryness, fire). Organ function may become erratic, leading to various sub-health symptoms or illnesses, such as:

  • Chronic fatigue
  • Low energy
  • Cold hands and feet
  • Pale or dull complexion
  • Dizziness
  • Palpitations
  • Chest tightness or shortness of breath
  • Insomnia, vivid dreams
  • Indigestion, constipation, or diarrhea
  • Irregular menstruation
  • Lower back pain or joint stiffness
  • Low mood or irritability
  • Weakened immunity

In VitalQi classes, we often note how office workers who sit too long can develop “Yang Deficiency” symptoms: irregular menstruation, cold limbs, dull complexion, lower back pain, shoulder and neck tension—classic signs of poor circulation and Qi-Blood imbalance.

How VitalQi Helps Rebalance Your Body

One of the core principles of VitalQi is to use specific movements, breathing techniques, and mindful guidance to regulate Qi and Blood and restore Yin-Yang harmony.

  1. Replenishing Yang Qi
Movements learned in the practice—especially those that stimulate the Du meridian (the “Sea of Yang”) and Kidney area (the source of Yang)—help activate the body’s innate Yang Qi. Feeling warm or lightly sweating during practice is a sign that Yang Qi is being awakened.
  2. Releasing Qi Stagnation
Movements involving stretching, spiraling, and patting help release blocked meridians, especially the Liver meridian often constrained by emotional stress. When Qi flows freely, Blood follows—and stiffness and pain ease naturally.
  3. Activating Qi and Blood Flow
Smooth, grounded movements enhance circulation, delivering nutrients throughout the body and accelerating waste elimination.

“Where there is free flow, there is no pain. Where there is pain, there is no free flow.”
VitalQi helps the body return to its naturally unblocked state.

  1. Balancing Yin and Yang
VitalQi blends both dynamic and still practices. “Movement” practices raise Yang, while “Still” practices like breathwork and restorative rest cultivate Yin. With consistent practice, your body learns to find its balance between motion and stillness, rise and fall, open and close—restoring Yin-Yang harmony.

Closing Thoughts & Gentle Reminder

Dear students, sufficient Qi and Blood and a balanced Yin-Yang system are the foundations of robust health and the strongest shield against illness. When you understand the root causes of imbalance, you can start making mindful adjustments in your lifestyle—and use VitalQi as a powerful tool to rebuild your internal balance.

Each day of our “10-Day VitalQi Group Practice” is a step toward this balance. Keep practicing, and observe how your body transforms from within. When you feel more energized, warmer, lighter, and calmer, that’s your body telling you:

“My Qi and Blood are in harmony. My Yin and Yang are balanced.”

If you haven’t joined the course yet and are struggling with sub-health symptoms or feel like something’s out of balance, VitalQi offers a complete solution that starts from the root. It’s more than a practice—it’s a philosophy of life, teaching us to follow nature and reconnect with our body’s inner harmony and strength.

The true value of this practice is beyond words—only through direct experience can its wonders be known.

Remember: Health and balance must be nurtured with care.
Let’s continue learning through VitalQi to listen to our bodies and rediscover our natural state of vitality, harmony, and well-being.
