Dear students, living in today’s fast-paced world, we constantly face stress from work, family, and relationships. A moderate amount of stress can boost our performance and sharpen focus. However, when stress becomes too intense or persists for too long, it acts like an invisible seesaw master, quietly tipping our body’s internal balance.

Modern medicine refers to this internal balancing system as the autonomic nervous system—our body’s automatic control center. It quietly regulates heart rate, breathing, blood pressure, digestion, body temperature, and more—all beyond our conscious control. This system is mainly composed of two key players:

  • The sympathetic nervous system, which acts like the accelerator pedal in a car. It kicks in when we need to respond to challenges—raising our heart rate, blood pressure, and muscle tension to prepare us for “fight or flight.”
  • The parasympathetic nervous system, which is like the brake. It helps us relax, digest, recover, and conserve energy—slowing the heart rate, lowering blood pressure, and calming the breath, bringing the body into repair mode.

Ideally, these two systems work like synchronized dance partners, gracefully taking turns depending on what the body needs—balancing activity with rest. However, under chronic stress, it’s like the gas pedal is constantly floored. The sympathetic system remains overstimulated, while the parasympathetic system is suppressed and unable to function properly.

This imbalance is what we often refer to as autonomic nervous system dysfunction. It’s not a specific illness but a disturbance in mind-body regulation. When the “brakes” fail and the body can’t relax or restore itself, a cascade of problems may arise. In VitalQi classes, I often explain how stress obstructs the flow of qi and blood, leading to stagnation and blockages. This may manifest physically as rapid heartbeat, excessive sweating, muscle tension, sleep disturbances (like post-COVID insomnia or palpitations), digestive issues (acid reflux, IBS), lowered immunity (frequent colds, allergies), hormonal imbalances, or emotional instability (anxiety, irritability, panic). These symptoms, though seemingly unrelated, often stem from one root cause: a malfunctioning “main switch” of the autonomic nervous system.

As stated in our course materials:

“When the source of stress is ongoing, cannot be resolved, or we don’t know how to resolve it, the body’s qi and blood become knotted in various areas, severely disrupting circulation and internal organ harmony.”
